8% of school-age children have thought about or attempted suicide Mar 13, 2020

Eight in every 100 school-age children have experienced suicidal ideas and behaviours, according to one of the largest studies on childhood mental health.

The study, published this week in The Lancet Psychiatry, looked at risk and protective factors associated with childhood suicidality, a term that spans suicidal ideas, plans and attempts.

Occupational Therapy researchers seek people with Parkinson’s disease for new study Feb 27, 2020

If you have Parkinson’s disease (PD) and have questions about functional ability and the disease process, a new collaboration between the Movement Disorders Clinic at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health and the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy may be able to help. The goal of the project, a study involving a series of educational sessions, is to develop and offer group education for people with PD and their care partners.

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia and the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Lynn Raymond as Director of the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health (DMCBH), effective March 1, 2020. This appointment reflects the commitment of the Faculty of Medicine and its partners to upholding the vision of Dr. Djavad Mowafaghian and his foundation.

New Study Looks at the Effects of Aging on Testosterone in the Brain Feb 26, 2020

It is well-known that as males age, testosterone levels in their blood decrease and their cognitive function declines. Testosterone is a type of hormone known as an androgen which functions by binding to an androgen receptor. Androgens play important roles in cognition, which means it’s possible that age-related declines in testosterone contribute to changes in cognition as males age.

New paper highlights short comings in well-established genetic system to aid researchers globally Feb 4, 2020

It was nearly two years into one of her projects that Dr. Lin Luo (pictured) realized something wasn’t right. She had been using the Cre-loxP system—an approach frequently used to knock out gene expression in specific cell types in mice and other animals—to study functions of the Calsyntenin-3 protein. After months of troubleshooting, she realized the gene wasn’t just being knocked out in specific brain tissues as she had hoped. Instead, every tissue in the mouse—from head to tail—was losing the gene.
